VBS Boulderdash
Help
VBS Boulderdash --------------- Written By Alan Bond 2006 Features -------- Responsive character movement using the cursor keys, and always the same speed regardless of the user's keyboard delay. Includes the three main Boulderdash games from the C64 (60 caves) Exact rules of Boulderdash, also the timings are near-perfect (I tested it a lot using the real C64 Boulderdash). Scrolling isn't as smooth though. The "engine" can handle a full cave of moving Fireflys or any other moving object without any speed loss. Different colours for each cave using a very sneaky GIF trick (no palette modification or duplicate images where used) Sound effects workaround using midi (Wavs are too laggy and midi is a bit poor, but it's better than nothing) Changeable display size and game speed...saved in a cookie. Cave editor with quick test functionality (and a few extra game objects) Fully commented and un-encoded source. Feel free to use any techniques I discovered (but give me a credit...please?) Made entirely in VBScript and HTML so really it should be called DHTML-Boulderdash, but there's already a game called that. (Hell, it's 90% VBScript anyway so it should be called VBS-BD) The Game -------- You are Rockford (the ant?) and your goal in life is to collect as many diamonds as you can. Rockford travels through different caves dodging boulders and digging dirt until he's collected enough diamonds, then escapes through the exit to the next cave. Game Keys --------- Press the cursor keys to move Rockford around the cave. Press right control (RCTRL) and a cursor direction to dig dirt or collect diamonds without moving (this is called snapping). Use snapping to set free trapped Fireflys or Butterflys without letting Rockford get near them. Take care snapping items from above as anything above the area you snapped will come crashing down on you (boulders or diamonds) Speed And System Keys --------------------- NOTE: All the hot keys mentioned below have a menu option as well It's highly unlikely that VBS-BD will run too slow for you (as it was made with a decrepit Pentium II), but it may be too fast. The FPS (frames per second) is located at the bottom right of the screen. If the FPS is below 6 or above 8 then it will be red otherwise it will be green. What you need to do is get the game to run at a nice green 6-8 FPS (the same speed as the original Boulderdash). There are two ways you can do this: 1. Make the screen bigger using [HOME] and [PAGE UP] 2. Add a delay to the game using [+] If you have a good PC then you may need to do BOTH of these (lucky you!). When you have it just right press [INSERT] to save these settings in a cookie. If you have a PC like mine and you desperately want to play it with a large screen you can switch off the throttle by pressing [T]. A warning though, without the throttle the game will speed up and slow down when it wants to which makes it harder to play. Then again, sometimes slower is better. If you find the game too hard then playing it at a slower speed helps a bit. Likewise, if you have the speed just right and want to speed it up temporarily (if you're waiting for Amoeba to grow), you can disable the throttle. Press [S] to switch between tight (easy) and loose style scrolling. Tight will keep Rockford in the middle and scroll around him, loose will scroll when you reach the edge of the screen and then catch up with you. Loose scrolling is the same as the original Boulderdash but is for the "hardcore" only as it's very disorientating (old Spectrum 48k users should be fine though as it's scrolls the same as their version of Boulderdash) Press [P] to pause the game. It also stops redrawing and gives you back 100% CPU time (kernel processor usage) so you can do other stuff. You should pause before using the editor if you have an old PC. Press escape [ESC] to commit suicide. (incase you get stuck) Select a game by pressing [1],[2],[3] or [4]. You may also start at certain points in each game by pressing [A],[E],[I] or [M] (as soon as you press any of these keys a new game begins with 3 lives and zero score) To play a cave in the clipboard press [SPACE]. (see the cave editor's help to learn more about custom caves) Game Elements ------------- Diamonds Collect as many as you can to escape the cave. Will fall if there's a space below killing most things...including Rockford. Boulders The main obstacle of the game. Like Diamonds they will fall and kill you. Can be pushed left or right. The diamond and the boulder both roll off each other. Dirt Stops all moving objects except Rockford and the Amoeba. Rockford can dig it! FireFlys Weird square things that move around clockwise. Deadly to touch but can be crushed by boulders. Butterflys Like the FireFly but anti-clockwise. Explodes into nine diamonds. Steel Wall Indestructable wall. Normal Wall Can explode. All gravity objects will roll off the normal wall, so beware. Exit Looks like a steel wall until you collect enough diamonds then starts flashing. Enter it to leave the cave. Magic Wall Looks like a normal wall until you drop a boulder or a diamond onto it, it will then start flashing. While it's in this state all boulders turn into diamonds and diamonds turn into boulders. (It also swaps bombs and nuts in the same way) Amoeba Green blobby thing. Grows in size, kills FireFlys and Butterflys. If it grows too big it will turn into lots of boulders. If it gets trapped it will turn into lots of diamonds. Doesn't hurt Rockford but it can trap him. Slime (BD2) Looks like the Amoeba but doesn't grow. Will let boulders and diamonds pass through it if there's a space below it, and after a random delay. Trap Wall (BD2) Looks like a normal wall, but will grow left or right if it has space, which is bad. Rockford (BDCK) Looks like you and just sits there. If he dies you die (but can't be crushed by boulders) Extra Elements -------------- New Trap Wall Two types: vertical and all ways. The "all way" is pretty nasty as it can flood a cave in seconds. Nut Moves like a boulder except it doesn't kill you. If it gets hit from above by a boulder it will turn into a diamond. Bomb Explodes on impact....watch out. Conveyor Belt Moves most objects left or right (including walls!) Robot Moves towards Rockford but only kills him if it moves onto him (and not touching). Crushed by a boulder but not a diamond. Hot Steel Destroys everything around it (except steel walls) and is indestructable. Generator If touched by a moving object, that object will be absorbed and the generator will start to mass produce it. Has obvious benefits and pitfalls. Teleporter If entered from above or left then Rockford will be transported to the next teleporter. Below and right will teleport him to the previous one. He won't travel if the way is blocked...even by dirt. Credits ------- Peter Liepa and Chris Gray for creating the amazing game Boulderdash, which ate a lot of my free time when I was younger
FirstStar Software, for licensing Boulderdash and not taking down this tribute game. Holger Schemel for hosting the game, and also the author of the brilliant BD clone "Rocks'n'Diamonds", which eats a lot of my free time today
Peter Broadribb and his BDCFF web page which describes each element in exact detail, without which I'd never of got the Firefly's movement right.
